Earth4Energy E-Book Review

With the soaring costs of electricity, many thousands of people are looking at ways of reducing their annual power bill. Aside from the usual hint-and-tips, such as turning off appliances instead of just placing on stand-by, there is another way which is rapidly gaining popularity. Get yourself a wind turbine and some solar panels. Sounds great, but then you start looking at the cost of said equipment and realise that the payback period is going to be over many, many years!
Don't give up hope though, as with a little initiative and know-how, you can quite easily build your own wind turbine and solar system. Yup! You heard me - build your own!

My family and I had considered doing this sometime ago, after seeing a program on TV, but where do you start? Well, help is at hand, because Michael Harvey has put together a guide called Earth4Energy which explains all you need to know about sourcing the components and putting them together to start generating your own electricity.

Earth4Energy - Just How Easy Is It?

Well, I'll be honest. It's not easy. Not as easy as just popping down to the shops and spending thousands on pre-made equipment. But then, it's not that hard either. Michael does explain everything in quite simple steps, including where to get the components you need. I managed to source everything for my wind turbine for around $210. His sales pitch is "Build your own system for less than $200" so I didn't quite achieve that, but it was close. To be fair, with a little more hunting around I probably could have got the components for much less (maybe even FREE with some of the ideas he suggests) but I wanted to get started on my project.
The trickiest part that I found was cutting the turbine blades. He does provide templates which were a big help, but still, I found it fiddly. Everything else, including the wiring, was pretty straightforward. You do need a few basic tools, but don't think for one second that you need to be some kind of DIY wizard (I'm not) with a huge workshop (I haven't).

Earth4Energy - Is It Worth It?

Can you make your own wind turbine and solar panel without this book? Probably. Like a lot of things, the information is out there on the web somewhere if you know what you're looking for and where to find it. However - and this brings me on to the BEST thing about Michael's book - with this download ($47 at time of writing), not only do you get a top quality PDF book, you also get access to the Earth4Energy forum and help when you need it. Now, that's the kind of thing you are not gonna get with a book off Amazon or from your local bookstore.
Would I recommend it? Yes, undoubtedly. I haven't started on my solar project yet, but will do soon, once I get a free weekend.
